Yakamoto Clean Sweep - Prop art (Fall 2022)

Yakamoto Clean Sweep is a VGDC game developed over a ten-week quarter at UCI! (It has been approved for another quarter to develop more levels.) It can be viewed and downloaded here - https://maidandready.itch.io/yakamoto-clean-sweep
I worked in the art department with two other amazing artists. I was first responsible for prop art assets, but near the end I was able to design some concept art for environments. Needless to say, it was very fun to be part of this project!

Aerosol labels - At first, I really had no clue what to do, because I thought all aerosol labels were like Windex - blue and sparkly. I decided if the game's aerosol needed to be memorable, it'd had to look stylized - like how we buy things by packaging

Yakamoto label - the one based on existing brands. The backs of the labels were blank, though with the help of the writing team, descriptions
 now exist!

Lemon scented label - It's probably one of the more random designs, but the color scheme really hits like a lemonade stand. Whatever that means. I think it's really sweet.

Gingko scented label - This is thanks to one of Medibang's brushes (which is literally gingko leaves). I actually don't know what they smell like..

Medals - They're either bronze, silver, or gold based on how well the player does in a level. The one with the flower was accepted, though I felt as though more flowers could be chosen from (hence the columns of flowers). (The original was chosen)

We made the bronze medal a little dirty and less shiny to make the gold medal more enticing and desirable to achieve. The second version of the medal (overlapping flowers) were accepted.

After adjusting the highlights and indenting the shadows, the medals are completed!

Floor and wall tiles - It was a bit intimidating at first to come up with continuous tiles that don't distract. Only a few were selected because of the versatile colors.

These were part of the wall assets - though the one on the right was originally an alcove or indented wall panel, it was made as a window.

Soap talisman - Most designs of Japanese talisman can be seen with Omamori (pouches with patterned cloth and embroidery). Considering that, I thought including a variety of tassel knots and patterns would be appropriate

After a discussion it was decided that the talisman would be more like an Ofuda (often wood or paper amulets with divine power). The symbol for Chokurei (a Reiki) and 清 (pure, or clean) were to be implemented some way. (The broom was also considered)

The decision was refined even further to a select few, which needed experimentation in brushes. Paper seemed to fit better with the choices, and in the end a combination of the second and third concepts was passed as the final design

With the fast-approaching deadline, I was given the opportunity to design laser turrets for the game. I never designed guns before, so I was getting inspiration from birds, horse heads and mechanical pencils. 4 and 5 I pitched as pets. (7 was chosen)

With the design of turrets we had to decide what the laser would look like. Though it was needed as a single laser beam, I made extra designs just in case different effects were needed

The chosen laser beams - they aren't assets, but they helped design the real thing

This is for a dialogue scene. Since the game is more modern, I wanted the vibe to be cozier, so I added a few elements you'd see in a hotel

After color adjustments, I sent it to my art producer to put what was appropriate to the context in the frames.

A hotel lobby needed to be made quickly so that it would be modeled in 3D - both Japanese and Western modern hotels were appealing, so I thought combining both would be appropriate for the game.

The lobby needed to be much longer for the level design, and it needed to use assets already in the game. Doing this would set the previous color scheme off, but at least it's better for data!
